COVID-19 has hit societies and labour markets around the world extremely hard. The cut in economic activity is expected to be many times deeper in 2020 compared to the 2008-2009 Great Recession. Unemployment is already shooting up, often at an alarming pace, and the International Labour Organization (ILO) is warning of a massive destruction of jobs to the tune of 305 million full-time positions in the second quarter of 2020. While governments are responding with emergency measures, social partners are also stepping up efforts, engaging in social dialogue to try and limit the damage inflicted by the pandemic and related lockdowns.
Based on the Global Deal thematic brief Social Partnership in the Times of Pandemic, this webinar aims to highlight some of the measures taken by Global Deal partners to manage the economic and labour market consequences of the pandemic, and discuss possible solutions. Examples related to both advanced economies and emerging and developing economies will be presented.
